Mechanisms of liver allograft rejections

Liver transplantation (LTx) has become a standard treatment for many end-stage liver diseases. However, acute rejections still occur in about half of the liver transplant recipients even treated with a combination of different modern immunosuppressants. The ultimate goal of liver transplantation is tolerance induction, which largely relies on the understanding of mechanisms involved in acute re...

Partial dearterialization of the liver allograft.

The clinical course of five patients with partial dearterialization of their hepatic allografts is described. One patient died and three others suffered serious morbidity as a direct or indirect result of this complication. Partial dearterialization of the liver allograft is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication for which preservation of the complete hepatic arterial supply is...

Early tolerance in pediatric liver allograft recipients.

The authors report on six pediatric liver transplant recipients for whom allograft tolerance occurred shortly after transplantation (ie, less than 1.5 years). All the patients had associated life-threatening viral complications. They are currently immunocompetent. The tolerant state may be related to the development of a TH2 cytokine pattern.

Allograft hepatitis after liver transplantation for epithelioid haemangioendothelioma.

Primary hepatic epitheloid heamangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare neoplasm of vascular origin. We present a retrospective study of 6 patients with EHE treated by liver transplantation that were monitored clinically for more than 3 years and had protocol biopsy samples taken at 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 years posttransplant. None of the patients suffered from any form of viral or autoimmune hepatitis be...

Murine liver allograft transplantation: tolerance and donor cell chimerism.

Nonarterialized orthotopic liver transplantation with no immunosuppression was performed in 13 mouse-strain combinations. Two strain combinations with major histocompatibility complex class I and class II and minor histocompatibility complex disparity had 20% and 33% survival of more than 100 days, but the other 11 combinations, including four that were fully allogeneic and all with only class ...
